In March of 2005, just for the fun of it, I set up something that I believe could be considered one of the earliest examples of home video game streaming. It was primitive to be sure. In fact, it wasn’t even video. But it was LIVE, from my home and it lasted off and on for 4 days. I even had a chat that I participated in, which was my only real communication with anyone watching.
This is the story of how I became one of the first video game “streamers” (quotes intentional).
A Very Different Time
In 2005, game streaming did not yet exist as we know it now. Much of the internet was still in the process of moving to high-speed connections from dial-up, and even DSL wasn’t much to get excited about. Windows XP was still the mainstream OS du jour, Twitch.TV didn’t yet exist, neither did OBS and most game consoles were barely aware of the internet.
In March of that year, I did something that was a primitive version of today’s game streams. It wasn’t exactly a video stream, but it was live and it got a very positive response. But first just a little background.
I was recently divorced, ending what was a difficult relationship of 5 years. The previous Fall, I had also lost my job and was evicted from my apartment in the same week. I was working as a line cook at a casual dining restaurant chain and back living with my mom and sister, sleeping in the same bed I had grown up with in my old room. It may sound like the worst time of my life, but it really wasn’t. For me it was a time of rest, healing, reflection and contemplation. It was an opportunity for me to hit the Reset button and re-launch my life with a lot of bugs fixed. During this time I reconnected with old friends and indulged in some of my old hobbies, especially video games.
A New Obsession
My good friend Jeff had just gotten Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2 and I usually spent some time at his place every day driving races, earning credits and opening up more of the game. Eventually I got a PS2 of my own (I fixed two of them for a friend, and he gave me one as payment) and my own copy of GT4 (yay for being able to afford things after years of not). GT4 became my favorite game. It was nearly an obsession. GT4 had a huge car list, loads of tracks and a wide variety of events, including three 24-hour endurance races. Yes, actual 24 hour races that you had to run without saving. It had two at Circuit de la Sarthe (the course that hosts the 24 hours of LeMans) and one at the Nurburgring Nordschleife.
GT4 also had what was called B-Spec Mode that allowed you to “train” an AI driver who could take on some of those long endurance races for you, so you wouldn’t have to. I was not about to make any use of this whatsoever. I planned to A-Spec the entire game, including those 24 hour races. To me, using B-spec was taking the easy way out and there was no way I would use it, even on the three 24 hour courses.
The Nurburgring Nordschleife
The Nurburgring Nordschliefe (or “The Green Hell” or simply “The Ring”) is a long, grueling course 13 miles in length. It has a long, storied history and is among the most challenging courses in the world. It has significant elevation changes, dangerous high speed sections, slower technical sections, sudden drops, long corners and kinks that tempt you to go flat out at your own risk. The track has claimed the lives of a number of drivers, and nearly killed others, such as Niki Lauda, who barely survived and went on to win another Formula 1 championsihp.
And I loved it. I have driven more simulated laps on this course than any other, of that I am convinced. Any time I got a new car, the first thing I did was take it around The Ring at least once.
Beginning the 24 Hours of Nurburgring
On March 21, 2005 at approximately 7pm EST, I started the 24 Hours of Nurburgring. I decided to use the 1969 Ford GT40, one of my favorite cars in the game. I knew it was likely overpowered, but my plan wasn’t to have a close race. I just wanted to run it and win it. I also knew the GT40 would be a bit of a handful to control, so my secondary goal was to continue beating my best laps.
After about 4 hours of driving, I decided it would be fun to take some screenshots using my video capture card, just for posterity. The first few I took were done manually, as I had my sister execute the command while I was driving. But then I figured I could just automate the process and take as many as I wanted, so I wrote a small script that took a screenshot every minute. But that led me to realize that it would be very easy to make these screenshots visible on a publicly viewable web page. So I installed and quickly configured a web server, set up a port forward on my router and suddenly, anyone in the world could see my progress in the form of screenshots every 5 seconds.
My internet connection was a slower DSL connection, so I had to use low image resolution and didn’t dare take the screenshots any more frequently. I posted a link to the page on the Gran Turismo 4 Message Board on GameFAQS and anyone interested could then watch me.
So in a way, it was video. It was just at a VERY low frame rate and resolution.
This is what the page looked like:
The Stream Goes Live
The response was better than I imagined. People were legitimately captivated by this, even though the race itself was completely uneventful, as I had gotten a huge lead early on and never looked back. Something about it had people waiting for me to get home from work or wake up from a short night’s sleep and drive some more. Maybe it was the risk that if I lost power, I would lose all my progress, or just the novelty of seeing someone conquer a 24 hour race simulation in near real time. Believe me, having a power loss was definitely on my mind. Nonetheless, I had hundreds of viewers from all over the world, and the link had even been posted on other Gran Turismo message boards. People were captivated not only by the fact that I was running the full 24 hours myself, but that I had set up a way for people to watch it live.
For nearly four days, interrupted by sleep and work, I drove 24 hours in GT4 and went on to finish and win the race. During the final hours, our home internet connection was rendered unusable due to the amount of traffic to this little website serving up a small JPEG every 5 seconds. I had gotten thousands of hits per day and hundreds of unique visitors from around the world.
One user even wrote a series of interview questions for me to answer after I had finished the race. One of the questions even states:
“You probably have accomplished a first in history of gaming by putting this race on the internet.” — DaggerK, GameFAQs poster
What follows here is a gallery of images saved from the “stream”, and then the entire thread on GameFAQs that I happened to scrape later on to save.
The GameFAQs Thread
The only public posting I made about this was in a thread on the Gran Turismo 4 message board on GameFAQs. Although the link was shared on a few international Gran Turismo message boards in Germany.
This is that thread.

Yeah, a few things you’ll notice. Flugplatz gets me almost every lap after I pit, Adenauer-Forst about every 2 or 3 laps, Mutkurve occasionally, and Tiergarten/Antoniusbuche on the laps that I pit.

I do like to drive in 3rd person. In any of the other views, you have very little idea of what the rear of the car is doing. In a real car you have the advantage of being able to *feel* it. But not so in the first person view on a video game. So I like to at least be able to see the rear of the car.
I do pause at the end of a lot of laps to get a quick drink or eat a cookie.
It seemed like I messed up one problematic turn each lap, especially on the laps on worn tires. I’m also driving rather conservatively, as there is no real need to drive hard. Maybe tomorrow I’ll try to beat my times and drive harder. But 6 hours and 42 minutes isn’t so bad. I did that much in two sittings throughout the last 24 hours. At this rate it will definitely take me a couple more days. 🙂
crank addiction
hahaha.. one would think that. 🙂 I just have a lot of discipline and patience for stuff like this. A-specing the 24 hour races is just something I really want to say I’ve done, and I will.
Well, back at it in about 7 hours! Enjoy the Pause screen at the pit stop! 😉

This has actually been pretty fun. I just sort of came up with the idea while I was driving around the Ring on autopilot at about lap 46. I was thinking about taking screenshots every 20 minutes or so to chronicle the race and maybe get some good pics. Then I realized I could do that automatically and thought, “Hmm… if I start the webserver, I can just have the screenshot program dump one into the web directory every so often and *anyone* can see it.” So I sat down to my workstation, set up a few things and 10 minutes later, I started this topic.
Glad a few people are getting some kind of masochistic enjoyment out of it. 😛

’69 Fort GT40 Race Car. I thought I’d go classic for this one.
I didn’t have time to hack up any javascript last night, to enable automatic refreshing. If I do this again, I’ll prepare something a little better. I hacked this little setup in about 10 minutes at 2 something this morning.
And yeah, I make mistakes. Expect to see me lose it at least once a lap on the corners after high speed sections.

I like this idea. You can also write HTML so you can set up a page that refreshes itself. Here it is:

As for this being a waste of time… I don’t think Tazio Nuvolari or AJ Foyt considered the countless hours they spent on the track a waste of time. I’ll never get to race like this in real life, so this is pretty much as close as I’ll get. So I’m going to do it all, *myself*. Another analogy I’ll use for B-spec: the game might as well just say, “Congratulations, you now have a car that’s fast enough to win the 24 hours of Nurburgring. Would you like to say that you won (Cancel/OK)?” I mean really, what’s the point of having endurance races in this game if you’re not going to do them?

I actually wrote a very small 5 line Unix shell script to do this. I run it from within the web directory. It uses the ‘streamer’ program to capture the image. This is all done in Linux, by the way. The script captures the image, sleeps for 5 seconds, the captures another one. Very simple, really. That’s why it only took like 10 minutes to set up this whole thing.

I’m using Super Hard Racing tires on both front and back. They last me 4 laps, as you can see. But that’s not bad considering that that’s almost 52 miles. I pit every 4 laps.

I’m thinking about reducing my breaks to every pit stop intead of every lap. That’s more realistic anyway.
‘Angst Kurve’ is known as “Mutkurve’ in German. I prefer the German word because it means “Courage Curve” as opposed to “Fear Curve”. Even though it’s seemingly an easy bend, it’s at the end of an extremely high speed section and if you’re not set up correctly, you’re done.

I’m pretty sure it’s only a 1 A-spec point race. I’m currently 4 laps and then some ahead of the 2nd place car (the Alpha Romeo touring car). That translates to over a half hour ahead.
Man, that car is hard to keep under control at the end of the Dottinger Straight on bad tires. I’d say I only have a 50% success rate of that, maybe less.
Now, my proud moment was getting a new best lap time of 6’48.149 on lap 98. 🙂

Kinda makes me look like a little punk byotch for B-spec’ing the entire thing. But, with a wife, factory job, and a healthy addiction to whiskey (which results in some very ego-shattering driving), my time is limited.
Plus, on top of that, I used the AMG Mercedes-Benz what-ever-the-hell…..and happened to forget to purchase hard tires…..only had the medium, which was punishment from God for some of my crimes….
……that car is awfully “bouncy” after a few (too many) cocktails.
Keep at ‘er mate….you got my respects!

Whoever said that he has to leave the TV on?
The web page that’s set up just links to the image that’s on the hard drive.
The only things that have to be on are:
1. the PS2 (to preserve the game state)
2. the computer to return the web page
I have some images from yesterday. I am looking to get some more good ones this morning.
One thing: I wish the images were a higher resolution although I can’t imagine that working well with a 5 second update and all these people hitting the site so, for now, the way it is is better than cool.

I turn my TV off when I’m not playing. I also turn off the capture script. There’s no need to have my computer writing to disk every 5 seconds when it’s going to be the same image over and over. 😉 I chose the resolution for the exact reason that was stated above. I wanted the image/page to be big enough that you didn’t have to squint to see it, but small enough that a lot of hits wouldn’t take up all my bandwidth.
But I’ll have to say I’m impressed with the performance of my computer. It’s only a 500 MHz P3 with an old 8GB IDE drive. Not only is it running a bunch of programs right now, but it’s capturing screenshots and serving thousands of hits per hour and not missing a beat.
Well, looks like I can get in another four hours before going to work, which will put me at 18.

Do you not know how difficult the Nurburgring? The course is so tough that even F1 abandoned it. Cut the guy some slack. He’s doing something that many of us don’t have the endurance or determination to do. If you even lose your concentration for one bit, you’ll end up off the course w/ the narrow road and the constant elevation changes around the corners.

#1 – So I can hear the car. The GT40 has some nice engine sounds and I like to hear it.
#2- So I can see the car. It’s important to me to know what the rear of the car is doing. When you’re in a car in real life, you can *feel* it. You can feel it breaking loose or bouncing. But with the “in car” view in GT4, you can’t. You have very little idea of what’s going on back there. In the “out of the car” view, you can at least see it. Plus if it’s a nice looking car, I like to see it. 🙂

Yeah, the GT40 is fully tuned, and let me say, it’s a handful. It handles very well at low speeds, but at speeds over 170, it is *so* easy to lose control, especially on bad tires. That’s why bends such as Flugplatz, Aremburg, Adenauer-Forst and Mutkurve are such problem spots.
And if you mean do I plan to A-spec this race again, I doubt it, at least on this file. But I do still plan to A-spec the other two 24 hour races.

What’s wrong w/ looking in the FAQs? I think it’s helpful to know what cars you get when you win diff. races. Helps me to be a little more purposeful when playing through the game, and not just wasting money buying a car when a day later, I win the same car. I’m married and have a full time job. I ain’t got time to screw around…but I do have time to do a 4 hr. endurance race…heheh.

I don’t know how you do it man. I was getting tired and figity after just 2 hours of it. Plus my wheel isn’t set at a good enough position so I’m reaching for it so it bothered my back and shoulders. Sorry, that was sorta “old man” talk.
BTW, I think you should do screenshots like that for your replay when you’re done. It’ll prob. just have the first 30 or so laps, but at least people can get some nice screen captures of it if they want.

Tell us some of the things you have to deal with by driving a 24hr race.
—
It’s in the game!
dhalsimrocks
Posted: 3/23/2005 11:03:07 AM
When it comes to what I deal with running a 24 hour race…
Sitting or lying in the same place for hours on end. I’m doing this in my bedroom. My 27″ TV is on a stand about 6 feet from the foot of my bed. This allows me to sit on the edge of it, or lie down. But lying down hurts my neck after a while, so I do sit most of the time.
The possibility of a power outage hangs in the air all the time. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m mentally prepared for that to happen. I knew it was a possibility from the very beginning. If it happens, I won’t go ballistic and start shooting people from a bell tower. But that definitely drives me to finish this as soon as I physically can.
I don’t take very long breaks because I want to get as much done in a sitting as possible. But I have to stay hydrated and fed, so I keep a glass of juice and some cookies all the time.
The biggest hindrance is work. If I didn’t have work, I’d have this finished by now. But believe it or not, when I’m at work I look forward to coming home and doing this. After you put in so much time, quitting is no longer an option. That’s another reason I posted this on the internet. I knew it would drive me to see it through to the finish.
Speaking of which, time for a few more laps. Maybe I’ll get back into my “break only during pit stops” pattern that I had going last night.

And I just remembered that over 7 HOURS of this race was recorded. I can’t remember how much time it was exactly, but I think somewhere close to 8 hours, it flashed the “Finished recording replay” text.
So yeah, that will provide some very nice screenshots. I will save it as long as I have enough memory card space (only file I have is GT4). And I don’t think I’ll play the replay *unless* I can save it, save the game, then replay it. Otherwise that gives mother nature 8 more hours to cook up a thunderstorm to take out the power.

No, I didn’t post that on that German message board. My guess is that one of their board members lurks on this one. It’s actually on two other German message boards and a granturismox.com forum. And some tlplanet site that you have to have an acount on to see.
Yes, I’m really doing this. I have 8 hours to go, and I plan on doing at least half of that before I go to bed, and the final half tomorrow. I have the day off, so I will complete it tomorrow for those interested in being here for the finish.
dsadley, VERY cool shot. I’m glad somebody’s getting these. I think I’m going to hack up a program to save all of the pictures of my final lap.
For those interested, the script I wrote for doing this is quite simple:
#!/bin/sh
while [ true ]
do
streamer -o ring.jpeg
sleep 5s
done
and that’s all. I run that from within my web directory. streamer takes a screenshot named ring.jpeg, which is the image on ring.html. It’s that simple.
Well, I don’t know about anybody else, but I’m anxious to get started again! Let’s roll!

Man, at the end of lap 139, I wiped out like I’ve never wiped out before on the Ring. It’s like there is no more gravity once this car gets over 170 mph. Combine that with all of the elevation changes and surface irregularities of the track, and it makes for quite a handful.
Time for a quick bite to eat. Be back at it in a couple minutes.

If racing this race doesn’t get your heart going then how about doing it with the world watching? They let you know every time you hit the wall.
And add to that: the perfect climax — you don’t have to go to work and you are 8 laps ahead

i think i know a way to keep the PS2 from geeting hot
first, put a fan behind the PS2. Make sure the fan’s blades are spotless so it won’t blow dust into your console
then, turn on the fan full blast
it helps if the room is slightly chilled, no colder than 65*F
correct me if i’m wrong

1.DaggerK: Congratulations! How do u feel?
dhalsimrocks: Fantastic! I know it wasn’t a real car in a real race, but it has to be at least something like what the guys feel in real life. I’m definitely glad I did it, and especially glad that I was able to share the experience with so many people.
2.DaggerK: How long did this take and what was your biggest challenge?
dhalsimrocks: I started at 3am Monday morning, about 2 hours before going to bed. So all in all, about 4 days. The biggest challenge for me was putting in the time yesterday. I was getting tired because I had had little sleep the night before, and I had work as well. I was pausing and taking breaks more often that I would have liked. Yesterday felt like it took forever.
3.DaggerK: Does your family know what you have accomplished and are they proud of you?
dhalsimrocks: For all intents and purposes, my family and close friends do know what I did. My sister and two good friends were here for the final 45 minutes. One of my friends will be A-specing the same race soon (he’s just finishing 1000 Miles). I think they are either impressed, think I’m crazy, or both. 🙂
4.DaggerK:The GT40 ’69 is a handful, and somewhat of a beastly racecar to drive with the extra tuning…Why did you choose it and do you wish that you might have used a different car?
dhalsimrocks: Well, I previewed this race once to see what I would be up against. I really wasn’t sure how the GT40 would fare until I was pulling away on the first lap. I love the car. It’s quite a fun ride, especially over 170 mph, when the downforce seems to be zilch. Corners such as Flugplatz, Aremburg, Adenauer-Forst, Courage Curve and Antoniusbuche/Tiergarten were particularly tough challenges. I also wanted to use a classic for this race, and the GT40 just hit the spot, I think.
5.DaggerK: Can you give us a little bio of yourself? age, job, where u live, aspirations.
dhalsimrocks: I’m 26, live in Ohio. I work as a cook at a restaurant, but that’s temporary. I have degrees in Computer Science and Math, and may go back into that field soon. Although, I do really enjoy cooking. So I’m not sure what my occupational route will be.
6.DaggerK: Do you think that one day you might drive the real Nurbergring?
dhalsimrocks: I would LOVE to run a few laps on the Ring, and have even looked up prices for the laps, as well as rental cars in Germany. Should I ever get to visit Europe, which I plan to do, I will not leave without running on the Nordschliefe. 🙂

dhalsimrocks: First of all, I recommend doing it! Definitely make yourself comfortable. I like the setup that I had, which allowed me to play sitting or lying down. But I don’t recommend lying down when you’re getting tired! Take regular breaks, even if they are short. Just to get a quick drink or bite to eat. I always had juice and/or cookies nearby. Pick a car that you like, that you are comfortable with and that will give you the amount of challenge you are looking for. Obviously, I didn’t care much about it being a close race. It was hard enough as it was. Practice on the Ring with that car. Doesn’t have to be a whole lot, but enough to familiarize yourself with it. For actual tips on running the Ring, feel free to email me. 🙂
8.DaggerK: Women are turned on by racecar drivers. Do you think that this accomplishment will impress the ladies and maybe get you a hot girlfriend?
dhalsimrocks: Not 5 minutes after I crossed the start/finish line, I got a call from my friend’s sister-in-law, who happened to be watching me. 😉 I think it will be one extreme or the other. I’ll either be a HUGE freaking nerd to them, which is pretty much the truth, or this will show the kind of … ahem… endurance I have. 😉
9.DaggerK: With Grand Tourismo we are able to drive all the famous race courses in the world. How do you rank the Nurbergring?
dhalsimrocks: Absolutely nothing like it. Circuit de la Sarthe comes in second, but it doesn’t even come close to matching the complexity and difficutly of the Ring. It has a rich and interesting history to go along with it, which makes it that much cooler. I’ve learned so much about this track in the last 2,605 miles. It has a lot of challenge to offer. Even after all of those laps, I still made mistakes, *knowing* what was ahead.
10.DaggerK: You probably have accomplished a first in history of gaming by putting this race on the internet. What inspired you and was it worth it?
dhalsimrocks: It all started when I was about 4 hours into the race. I had my sister take a few screenshots manually using my capture card program. I did this just for posterity, really. Then I got to thinking that I could automate this, so I could get screenshots throughout the whole process without having to do anything. One thought led to another, and I figured, why not have it just dump the screenshot into a publicly viewable web directory, so others can see it. Verifyable proof, know what I mean? I’ve talked about A-specing this race on this board for the last couple of weeks, so that was motivation as well. I certainly don’t regret doing it. In fact, it made it a lot more worthwhile, and enjoyable. I don’t think I would have looked forward to it while I was at work, if I didn’t know there were others sharing the experience. THAT was motivation. Here is the first screenshot that my sister took:
http://68.238.10.197:8080/~jdoolin/4hr_ring.jpg
11.DaggerK: Thanks for the interview and sharing your experience! What’s your next race for Grand Tourismo 4?
dhalsimrocks: I’m thinking the Formula GT series. 🙂 It will probably be a little while before doing another 24 hour race, but rest assured, I will do it again, and I will do the same thing with the web page. In fact, I think I’ll run Circuit de la Sarthe 2 for my next 24 hour race.
This interview was a great idea. Those were some very well thought out questions, and it helped me a great deal, as far as what to say about it. Thanks to everyone who tuned in, for the kind words of encouragement, questions and entertaining late night/early morning banter! I had a great time, and hope everyone else did too!

Yeah… uhh… about that replay… I was pretty darned anxious to GET THE GAME SAVED, and totally forgot to save the replay. I wonder if I would have been able to fit 7 hours of replay on my memory card, though. I was just to antsy to get the game saved.
A little about my PS2. It’s been on since Sunday night at about 10pm. It feels quite cool to the touch. I think it would have been fine for even longer. Interestingly, this thing wouldn’t even spin disks when I got it. A friend gave it to me saying if I could fix it, I could keep it, then fix his OTHER broken PS2, and that’s exactly what happened. 🙂
Also, thanks to everyone who saved screenshots. You guys got some really good ones, and I’m so glad they’re up there to look back on. I’m glad there were a few pit stop shots in there as well. Nice job!

I thought I’d share some more thoughts on the race:
I realized that I drove for 2605 miles. The oil most definitely needed changed in the GT40. I’ve developed a fondness for that car that only an experience like the 24 Hours of Nurburgring can produce.
That *was* a victory lap, when I made a trip around the Ring backwards after the race.
Looking at the photo albums of screenshots has been fun. I look at the images that show me on lap 82 and it seems so long ago. I can actually remember a few of the wipeouts or occasions that were in these photos. I also liked the shots of laps 201 and 202 (when the timer had just reached 24 hours, very good idea).
I’m still totally amazed at the response this got. I had no idea it would appeal to so many, and I’m really glad it did. I’m proud to have inspired others to A-spec endurance races. I do recommend it. It’s not always easy, but it’s very rewarding. I don’t think I would have had half as much fun had I not posted that web page. So seriously, you guys made this orders of magnitude better.
Speaking of rewards, the prize car was WELL worth the effort. Man, that car is *incredible*. And I love the color (all white).
I would have to say that the whole thing was easily the most fun I’ve had with this game. I don’t think anything will ever top it, but at the very least, I will do it again with both Circuit de la Sarthe races. But it may be a little while before I do that. 🙂 But when I do, I’ll be sure to announce it in advance.
Even now, GT4 is calling me. I’m tempted to turn on the PS2 and give the F1 a workout. But I think I’ll let that wait until tomorrow.

I think it would be great if you did the same thing. What I did was run a web server on the same computer that has the capture card. I had a script running that took a screenshot every 5 seconds, and saved it in a file called ‘ring.jpeg’ that was in a publicly viewable web directory. I couldn’t run the web server on port 80, because evidently Verizon blocks that traffic. So I simply ran the server on port 8080 and it worked fine. If you need any help setting yours up, I’d be glad to. Although, I’m doing this on a Linux machine, so I may not be of much help. 🙂
That reminds me, I have some very interesting statistics about the viewers of the web page. I analyzed the web traffic and discovered the following:
-337 people watched, from 39 different countries.
-The top 5 countries were US, Canada, UK, Switzerland and Australia
-290,724 total hits in 3 days time.
-1.37 Gigabytes total bandwidth used, most on Thursday
-Most of the hits occurred between 1 pm and 4 pm EST, which was a period during which I was racing (duh), and the time during which I finished.
-6 different operating systems and 10 different browsers were used
-The link to the page was on 4 other message boards, 2 of which are German.
-At least 2 people were looking at pornography before switching to my web page
All that on my 500 MHz Pentium III workstation sitting 4 feet from my TV and PS2 (and that I’m using right now).

You can watch it at www.granturismo5.com/index.php?refresh=On
I’m currently 2 hours (halfway) through it at the time of posting, and just eating a sandwich, I’ll be back racing shortly.
